Hands that tell stories: abayomi dolls, playing, and quilombola knowledge

Inspired by reflections on the body-territory concept, especially the notebooks Our Body Is Our Ground, We Are That Ground That Carries and Takes Everything Along and Memory Demarcates Our Body, the workshop understands education as a process of activating ancestral memories. The body is understood as a living territory of experiences, affections, and knowledge, where memory cannot be separated from land, collectivity, and cultural practices. Learning, in this sense, also means recognizing the paths inscribed in the body, in shared histories, and in gestures transmitted across generations.
The abayomi dolls are presented not only as toys, but as ancestral technologies of care, affection, and resistance. By sewing, tying, creating, and playing, children experience sensitive forms of learning, where imagination and belonging move close together.

Abayomi dance: narratives in stop motion

A continuation of the workshop Hands that tell stories, this activity invited children to expand the narratives connected to abayomi dolls through stop-motion animation. The abayomis become characters, guardians of collectively created stories and memories, moving through settings imagined by the children themselves.
