Thousands and thousands of years ago, in the midst of darkness, life and all the beings that live around us came into existence. Every plant, animal and mineral being are spirits who live together in a deep tangle of knowledge, like a great web in which everything is connected. All that lives on Earth has their guardian and owner. The Guarani call them Ija, the Maxakali Yamiyxop, the Huni Kuin Yuxibu, the Yanomami Xapiri. Each people names this beings and maintains with them a relationship of deep communication in the spiritual world.<\/p>\n

Disrespecting these beings can lead us to illness. That's why children need to be taught from a young age to ask permission where they go, to know how to enter and leave the forest, the waterfall, the mountain. Respecting these spirit beings means living a good life in balance and health.<\/p>\n

There are some plants of power, also called teachers, who show us the paths, putting us in dialogue with spirit beings and also healing us when we are affected by some spiritual ailment.<\/p>\n

Many indigenous cultures in all parts of the world have historically made use of tobacco for their healing practices. This sacred plant is present in ancient cultures on practically every continent. Some use it in pipes which, through the puffed smoke, provide spiritual communication. Others blow snuff. It can also be chewed or taken as tobacco water for purging, providing deep cleansing. It is also used externally as a poultice. There are many uses for this being.<\/p>\n

Ailton Krenak, no Caderno Selvagem\u00a0Entrar no mundo \u2013 Conversas sobre \u201cPlantas Mestras\u201d<\/i>, em que dialoga com Carlos Pap\u00e1, diz: \u201cAprendi ent\u00e3o a fazer uma coisa que ainda n\u00e3o ouvi ningu\u00e9m falando, que \u00e9 de ler o tabaco. Sei que tem gente que l\u00ea borra de caf\u00e9, que l\u00ea outros movimentos na \u00e1gua. Mas s\u00f3 experimentei essa coisa de ler a mensagem do tabaco dichavado, sem nenhum uso, s\u00f3 ali olhando para ele me mostrando coisas. Foi muito bom. \u00c9 prov\u00e1vel que outras pessoas j\u00e1 tenham tamb\u00e9m vivido essa experi\u00eancia em outros contextos, do tabaco ser essa voz de sa\u00fade, essa imagem ativa. N\u00e3o \u00e9 uma coisa inerte, mas \u00e9 algo vivo. \u00c9 claro que quem faz o uso ritual dele, o uso cotidiano dele, tem outras experi\u00eancias.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

We realise, however, that this sacred being has been treated disrespectfully by human societies. Children grow up fearing tobacco because they are taught that it kills, causes cancer or lung problems. This statement is loaded with ignorance about the use of this plant, because for many cultures that use tobacco ritualistically, tobacco heals.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the profundity of plant beings in this intimate relationship with our lives means delving into the science of the forest, which for centuries has been hidden and ignored by capitalist and Western science. There is a knowledge that governs very sensitive communications made through ancestral technologies such as telepathy, intuition and dreams. The great praying men and women, the healers, spend times of their lives in a process of preparation to achieve understanding in order to dialogue with the teacher plants and make healing possible for humans.<\/p>\n

Ainda no di\u00e1logo\u00a0Entrar no mundo<\/i>Still in the 'Enter the World' dialogue, together with Ailton Krenak, profound thoughts were brought up by Carlos Pap\u00e1 so that we could feel the delicate relationship between tobacco and the Guarani people.<\/p>\n

\u201cO petyngua leva as mensagens diretamente do Nhanderu. E Nhanderu vai te guiar. E essa fuma\u00e7a que voc\u00ea solta, de dentro para fora leva o pensamento, o sentimento. E a fuma\u00e7a vai pairar por todo o universo. Vai se misturar com o vento. Vai se misturar com o aroma do ambiente. Com isso voc\u00ea vai se fortalecer cada vez mais. Mas isso voc\u00ea vai entender melhor quando tiver seus filhos. Atrav\u00e9s do tabaco e da fuma\u00e7a vinham mais mensagens. Pela embriaguez do tabaco, eu comecei a perceber e entender os c\u00f3digos da fuma\u00e7a na medida que voc\u00ea bafora. A fuma\u00e7a come\u00e7ou a abrir os c\u00f3digos. Acabei entendendo esses c\u00f3digos\u2026 E vinham as falas antigas, falas como se os grandes paj\u00e9s se manifestassem. Senti uma for\u00e7a muito grande, me senti gigante. N\u00e3o sentia mais meus p\u00e9s no ch\u00e3o. Eu me senti\u2026 Parecia que eu tinha capacidade de voar. Assim, comecei a perceber que o petyngua \u00e9 um instrumento que cura, que faz com que voc\u00ea entenda todos os c\u00f3digos do tempo. Foi a\u00ed que tamb\u00e9m compreendi o que n\u00f3s chamamos de teko axy. Teko axy quer dizer corpo imperfeito. O vento traz e leva as mensagens. A fuma\u00e7a do pety, que \u00e9 o tabaco, essa fuma\u00e7a quando pensamos, leva o pensamento e paira para que o vento traga respostas.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Through these thoughts I invite everyone to strip away the layers of mental formatting we've received since childhood. May we begin to rethink our relationships with the dark, with the Sun, with the rain, the wind, tobacco, coca and so many beings that we have unlearned to respect and with whom we can certainly live in harmony. Industrialisation has captured some teacher plants, and it's up to each of us to relearn how to relate to each of them.<\/p>\n
