PROFESSOR ESCRAGNOLLE DÓRIA MUNICIPAL SCHOOL (RIO DE JANEIRO)

Location: Complexo da Pedreira – Rio de Janeiro (RJ)
Community involved: 440 children and 20 teachers
LAS correspondent: Genicelle Colchone

Workshop 1
Embroidering Memories from Pedreira
07/05, 08/05 and 28/05

Workshop facilitator: Thais Reis (embroiderer and atelier practitioner)
Photos: Rosemberg Awni
Volunteers: Carol Delgado, Claudia Daher, Eliane Brígida Falcão

The workshop Embroidering Memories from Pedreira is part of LAS’s activities at Professor Escragnolle Dória Municipal School, inspired by Selvagem materials such as a Arrow "The Feral and the Sphere" and the Ancestral Memories Cycle. From these references, memory is understood not as something confined to the past, but as a living technology for the transmission of worlds, capable of renewing knowledge, reorganising community bonds and sustaining sensitive ways of relating to the territory.

Educational outing
Ways of Knowing on Paquetá Island
14/05

Pedagogical mediation: Genicelle Colchone
Musical activity: Thiago Café
Class: Year 3 of Primary School (40 students)
4 educators from the Escragnolle school
6 Selvagem team members

This proposal presents a territorially grounded educational experience with students from Professor Escragnolle Dória Municipal School, structured as an educational outing to Paquetá Island, in direct dialogue with Selvagem’s Waters Cycle study materials.

The Waters Cycle understands water as an originating element that generates, sustains and connects all life, bringing together reflections that span ecological, cultural, spiritual and political dimensions. In this sense, the proposal moves beyond an understanding of water solely as a natural resource, insisting it as a living entity, bearer of memory, language and ancestry.

The activity brings together environmental education, cultural heritage, social memory and ancestral knowledge, in accordance with Law 11.645/2008 [a law which requires the inclusion of Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous history and culture in Brazilian school curricula], promoting recognition of Indigenous and Afro-Brazilian presences in the territories and waters of Guanabara Bay – understood, within the Waters Cycle, as a sacred territory traversed by origin narratives, songs and cosmologies.

Workshop 2
A film of Pedreira memories
Second semester 2026

Location: Professor Escragnolle Dória Municipal School
Audience: Children aged 6-11
Suggested duration: 4 weeks
Language: Audiovisual, memory, territory and imagination

In this workshop, children are invited to look at the territory in which they live, the Complexo da Pedreira, in Rio de Janeiro, as a place full of stories, landscapes, people and events.

The idea is to transform memories, everyday scenes, community sounds, play and pathways into short audiovisual records, creating a sensitive archive of Pedreira’s memories.

More than teaching filming techniques, the workshop proposes listening, observing and belonging, inviting children to recognise that their perspectives can also tell important stories about the place where they live.
